About
Welcome to Spruce Oaks Outdoor School
At Spruce Oaks Elementary, we firmly believe in providing an equal and equitable education for all our students. Our staff members are well-versed in the philosophy of Friere, which emphasizes the importance of collaboration, freedom, and critical thinking skills. We strive to provide an environment where students can feel safe and comfortable to express themselves and learn at their own pace.

What we value
At Spruce Oaks Elementary, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that embraces freedom, equality and democracy. That’s why we have adopted Freire’s critical pedagogy to empower our students to acquire and assert a sense of their rights and responsibilities in a democratic society that recognizes the common good over the corporate good. Our philosophy is centered around creating a nurturing learning environment where each and every student can reach their full potential and become active members of their community. Join us in shaping the future of our youth!
Founders Education
2000-2002
Diploma - Exercise and Wellness
Fanshawe College
Fanshawe College's Diploma in Exercise and Wellness program is a life-changing experience. It taught me how to holistically approach physical well-being, and its in-depth curriculum on anatomy and physiology equipped me with the foundational knowledge to design effective exercise programs. Beyond academics, Fanshawe College has a tight-knit community of students, professors, and alumni that extends beyond the classroom walls. It's a place where you can find support, guidance, and lifelong friendships. Thanks to Fanshawe College, I discovered my passion and gained the skills to make my dreams a reality.
2002-2005
Bachelor Degree - Sport and Fitness Leadership
Camosun College
Camosun College was the next step in my academic journey after Fanshawe College, and it proved to be an incredible experience that helped shape my future career in teaching. As a graduate of the Sport and Fitness Leadership program, I learned invaluable lessons about physical fitness and health that I continue to share with others to this day. If you're looking to take your passion for fitness to the next level, Camosun College is the perfect place to do it.
2005-2006
Elementary Post Degree Program (PDP)
University of Victoria
The University of Victoria's Post Degree Program gave me the final stepping stone I needed to achieve my dream of becoming a certified teacher. The program provided me with a solid foundation of skills and knowledge, which I've been able to use in many different settings. I've worked across the district, educating students of multiple age ranges and taking great pride in watching them learn and grow. This led me to my goal of starting an outdoor school after nearly 20 years of teaching.
